4 weeks until the Winter Meeting – Who’s Ready?

Greetings East Region!

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season with this balmy weather (close to 60 today in CT) across the east!   For those in the hills, from what I can see on various Facebook posts, there is snow on the ground and some of you are able to enjoy the white stuff!

We are 4 weeks away from our winter meeting!  I’m looking forward to some energetic discussions that will touch on (a) team events at nationals, (b) update from the AWSA Insurance Taskforce,  (c) accomplishments from 2015, and (d) a look at 2016 goals.

If you have a specific topic that you would like to see discussed, please let me know (multitasking@comcast.net).

Also if you want to put your name in the hat to officiate at Regionals and/or Nationals, please let me know as well.  This includes safety AND announcers!!!!!

Yes we will have clinic(s) on Sunday (assuming we have a minimum head count of 5).  Currently planning a Judge/Score clinic, and there is a request for a drivers clinic – I’ll work through Al Harris to determine if we can arrange an instructor.  Please contact me directly if you are interesting in officials clinics.  We have 32 judges on the downgrade list (3 needed clinics), 12 scores on the downgrade list (all due to missing tournament credits), 2 TCs that require clinics.  I didn’t receive the Driver downgrade list.

Look for details in the coming weeks about the session; in the mean time please RSVP with your attendance for the Saturday meeting to Marie Baker (billandmbaker@comcast.net).

Dates: Jan 9th (meeting) & Jan 10th (clinics)

Start Times: 9am both days

Updates to Online Trained Driver Class

Here’s a clarification from Melanie Hanson on updates to the online Trained Driver class for new Trained Drivers.

The class has two components, a video, and the Boat US online NASBLA approved class. If the applicant has already taken a NASBLA approved class (Boat US, US Power Squadron, Coast Guard, probably others) it is only necessary to watch the video. The applicant can then send evidence of whatever class they took to Melanie as a substitute for taking the Boat US online class.

Evidently the video is first and once you have watched it, the program asks if you’ve taken a NASBLA class and allows you to skip out. You still have to pay the USAWS class fee up front.

This makes a lot of sense, especially since a lot of people have taken a NASBLA approved class already, and it makes it easier on new Trained Drivers. Win!

See committee contact list under the governance link above to contact Brett and register for the clinic.

Reminder – Check your Credits

I’m receiving emails around drivers receiving notifications that they could be downgraded.

Please be aware of maintenance credits based on your officials ratings (Judge, Scorer, Safety, Driver).  Check out the last page of the guide book for reference or on the USA Water Ski site (http://www.usawaterski.org/pages/officials/awsa/awsaofficialsresources.htm)

To check your credits – log in as a member on the USA Water Ski website, then go to “My Officials Ratings” of the menu to the left, then select “Details” on the row of the rating you want to check.  If you see anything that says “NO” then you are missing requirements to renew.

Kind Regards, Tonya Maurer, East Region EVP AWSA

News for the Region

  1. On behalf of the region, the Eastern Regional Council wishes to extend their gratitude to John Wilkins, Terence Fogarty, and their entire team at Power Up Adirondacks, for hosting the 2014 Eastern Regionals in Lake Placid, NY. The effort was monumental.

Eastern Region Council met via conference call on September 30, 2014, and voted to accept bids for the 2015 Eastern Regionals from any interested clubs. Council to decide at the 2015 Winter Meeting in January.   Due date for the bids per the policy and procedure is 30 days before the winter meeting, that said bids are to be submitted by 12/1 to take into consideration the holidays.

  2. There currently is a site search for the 2015 Nationals; at this time San Marcos River Ranch has decided not to host in 2015.  If you know of a site that may be interested please let myself, Bob Mayhew, or Bob Crowley know.
  3. There were driver downgrades this year, if you were downgraded and feel you have hardship that should be considered please contact me ASAP.
  4. There are judges at risk for downgrade if they do not attend a Judge’s clinic.  Please note that there is a virtual clinic scheduled for 10/18/14 – please see the USA Water Ski website for details.  For those that will be due for a clinic – please jump on this chance to do it in the off season and in the comfort of your own home.
  5. We have several East Region skiers participating in the 35+ Worlds in Florida this week – I encourage you all to follow and provide virtual support!  There will be a webcast.  Rah Team Go!!!!
  6. For those that organize tournaments, please note that we will be stalking you for tournament dates in the next two months so that we can have a comprehensive schedule well before the winter meeting.  Last year we had conflicts, we are looking to avoid that this year.  At the winter meeting we will be reviewing the schedule.
  7. Over the next 30 days I’ll be revisiting the Policy & Procedures; draft of changes will be made available to the council members and a vote on those changes will happen at the winter meeting in January.

That’s all folks!    Enjoy the switch to fall!  Wishing everyone the best as the holidays approach!

Regards, Tonya Maurer East Region EVP
