AWSA UPDATE

USA Water Ski & Wake Sports, the American Water Ski Association (AWSA) and the Ski Club of the Palm Beaches announced today that the Ski Club of the Palm Beaches will not serve as the host of the 78th GOODE Water Ski National Championships, Aug. 4-8, at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach, Fla., due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on South Florida. It is important to note that the Nationals event has NOT been cancelled at this time. The AWSA board of directors is actively seeking an alternate site – and alternative dates if necessary – to conduct the world’s largest three-event water ski tournament in 2020.
The South Florida counties of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach have been Florida’s hardest hit areas with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter addressed to the board of directors of AWSA, the Ski Club of the Palm Beaches said: “We agonized over our decision and this certainly was not the outcome we wanted. However, the health and safety of our competitors, officials, volunteers, and staff in these troubled times amidst the Covid-19 virus had to be our priority. We realize that the event is not until Aug. 4, but there is simply no way to tell what the accessibility status of Palm Beach County will be with this health crisis at that time. Many factors went into our decision.”

USA Water Ski & Wake Sports suspended sanctioned events due to COVID-19 on March 18. USA Water Ski & Wake Sports is planning to begin sanctioning events again starting on May 18 and is currently finalizing Return to Play Guidelines for its more than 600 affiliated water ski clubs, nine sport discipline organizations and 14,000 members. Information on all sanctioned events, including the status of AWSA regional championships, will be available at www.usawaterski.org

In Memory of Bill Sapp

Unsung Hero

Bill Sapp

There are many unsung heroes in our water ski community.  Without them our sport wouldn’t be what it is today.

Bill Sapp, a founding member of both Timberlake and also of Garlands Millpond before Timberlake, passed away on April 30th.  Bill had been battling Parkinson’s and was pretty much bed bound from that.  Recently he developed Covid-19.  Our prayers go out to Bill and his family.  Bill had 3 children, now adults.  Erin, his eldest daughter, Gayle his middle daughter, and Brett, his youngest, all skied at Timberlake. Brett did quite a bit of fishing there as well.   Janet Marks is Bill‘s sister and she has been by his side since Parkinson’s took over his life.

If Bill had not been with us to help plan, guide and especially execute his leadership role in Timberlake’s physical development, there simply would not be a Timberlake.
(Roger Hammel)

When you look around Timberlake you see Bill’s lagacy.  The workmanship in the Timberlake boat house is in great part due to his precision and hard work.

Billy was a pleasant guy and was that way to all.  I never
heard him say anything ugly or disparaging, he was a true gentleman, and
he always shared a great smile.  Billy contributed a lot to Timberlake
as an accomplished builder and hard worker.
(Al Harris)

News from the AWSA National BOD Meeting

On January 25th, 2020, Directors and EVPs from all 5 regions, members of the AAC, HNDs and others gathered at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex for our AWSA Winter Meeting. Gordon Hall chaired the meeting which came to order at 8:05 am and went to about 4:30 pm. Full minutes will be posted when available, but here are some highlights.

Organization of Junior Divisions to be consistent with other sports.
AWSA Board passed the final stage of its migration to 2-year youth divisions by implementing B5/G5. The board also voted to make this change retroactive to the previous nationals so that it ties into the previously formed B4/G4 divisions.

So starting today B1/G1 remains under 10, B2/G2 is 10-11, B3/G3 is 12-13, B4/G4 is 14-15 and B5/G5 is 16-17. The programming for this was released today so we would love more testing eyeballs to make sure everyone and their scores are correct. We still have some overall and qualification issues to work out but if anyone sees anything out of the ordinary please let us so we have this 100% accurate before 2020 tourneys begin.

You can find the updated tournament entry form with B5 and G5 HERE

Dave Goode, 1955 – 2020

It is with a heavy heart that GOODE Skis announces the passing of its founder and president, Dave Goode.
Dave, 64, died Wednesday while taking part in one of his many passions, piloting his airplane.
Through his numerous technological advancements in both water skiing and snow skiing, and financial support of countless events and athletes in both sports, Dave touched the lives of thousands of people by helping them, and the sports they love, push the limits of performance.
A 2014 USA Water Ski Hall of Fame Award of Distinction recipient and member of the Michigan Water Ski Hall of Fame, Dave was an accomplished international competitor in both sports, recently winning the downhill event at the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Alpine Masters National Speed Series and earning a bronze medal in trick skiing at the Pan American Senior Water Ski Championships.
Dave leaves behind his beloved wife Dawn, parents Paul and Mimi, children Michael Goode, Lisa Goode McHugh (John), Whitney Hebard Felkl (Hans), Gregory Hebard (Adrianna), and granddaughters Maple Julia McHugh and Sunny Elizabeth Hebard.
