1998 Eastern Regional Water Ski Championships Timberlake - Sparta, Va. |
|
Our site is just 4 miles from Lake Holly who has hosted the Regionals three times, and will benefit us with their experience. We will be working the site this winter and spring to eliminate backwash, increase parking area, build a new starting dock, improve judging towers, upgrade tournament facilities, jump and electronics, and expand the sound system. Timberlake is a small club, with just 7 skiing families. If you can help with critical tasks such as dock starting, safety boat or swimmers, we will be most grateful if you volunteer. We are open to input and suggestions from skiers, and will try and accommodate your inputs and wishes. Roger Hammel has been appointed as Tournament Director, and he can be reached via Email on 104347.445@compuserve.com or via phone on 703-471-7769 if you have suggestions or questions. At the lake, Roger's phone is 804-633-2464. View Regional Guidebook Advertisement Timberlake History | ![]() click for enlarged 125K gif |
| Timberlake is a north-south lake, and sun is never a problem. The lake is 2150 feet long, and varies in width from 175 feet at narrowest points outside the course, to 350+ feet near the jump. Trees surround the lake, reducing wind effects and channeling any prevailing winds into a head or tail wind. Crosswinds are an extreme rarity and are very mild when they occur. Similar to Lake Holly, there is a slight right turn dog leg when entering the slalom course from the north end. The water is generally considered slow and "slalom friendly", but nevertheless, the lake has seen long jumps. (A jumper also known for his tricking once remarked about Timberlake - "...hard to believe - a Virginia lake that jumps long....") And he can ! For tricking, the water is deep. Within the trick course it is at least 7 feet deep or deeper, typically about 10 - 15 feet. Set ups are reasonably long, and there is adequate time to wrap for a T7 or T5B on the second pass coming from the upper end if you don't dawdle. | ![]() click for enlarged 97Kgif ![]() click for enlarged 135K gif |
| Please note that there are no restaurants close to the site. We will have a concession stand with coffee, fruit and pastries available in the morning, and in the afternoon we plan to have sandwiches, hot dogs, sloppy joes, soft drinks, water and snacks. If there is a menu item you would like, please call or Email me. | |
![]() Headquarters Hotel Information Other Area Attractions | We are located about 35 miles south-southeast of Fredericksburg Va. where the and Saturday banquet will be located. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants in Fredericksburg, two older motels, a campground and a new Bed and Breakfast guest home in Bowling Green, about 13 miles from the site, and other motels in Ruther Glenn just off I95. (See the overall map of attractions below, and resource list.) Bowling Green has added a couple of restaurants since 1995 regionals, the China Inn and a McDonalds with the best yogurt cones around. Timberlake will have room for a limited number of motorhomes and camping, but there are no hookups or other improved camping facilities. KOA campground near Bowling Green has improved camping facilities with bathhouse & pool. For those folks flying in, Richmond is the closest airport, about 45 miles to the south. Dulles airport outside of Washington DC is about 95 miles north of the lake. Fredericksburg has Shannon airport which can accomodate corporate aircraft, but it does not have commercial flights. |
| LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: Paramount's Kings Dominion is a large amusement park is to the south of Timberlake about 30 minutes away, and boasts 6 adult roller-coasters, and one children's coaster. (They are the Rebel Yell, Grizzley - my favorite, and the Hurler - all classic wooden coasters, with the modern steel coasters Anaconda and the Shockwave doing reverts, loops & cabrolls, and an indoor coaster that will really surprise you. I understand that they also added a 7th roller coaster-like ride - the Volcano this past winter where you sort of do an Air-Raley or something close to it...) | ![]() Click on map to enlarge (100kjpg). |

Fredericksburg and the surrounding area has numerous Civil War and Colonial era historical sites and battlefields that appeal to many tourists. I have available a package containing an overall map of the area attractions, lodging and phone numbers that I will mail to skiers upon receiving their self addressed stamped envelope. (Legal-size envelopes and two stamps please). Those who would rather browse their way around Virginia can follow the links below. Tourism in Virginia This is a more interactive site. I believe it is maintained or established by some of those fine folks at Virginia's #1 engineering and tech weenie school - Virginia Polytechnic Institute aka Va Tech or VPI !!
