Six to Receive Water Ski Foundation Scholarships
POLK CITY, Fla. - The American Water Ski Educational Foundation
(AWSEF) Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee has announced the
awarding of six college scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each
for 2008.
The Correct Craft Scholarship was awarded to John Roberts (Big Rock, Ill). A junior at Northern
Illinois University majoring in mechanical engineering, his career
objective after obtaining a Masters or Ph.D., is to work as a professional
engineer. Roberts reestablished the NIU water ski team, organized
all team events, and served as president in 2007-2008. He has competed
in water ski events since the age of 8.
Andrew P. Martin (Eaton, Ohio), a student at Huntington
University majoring in computer science and dma-animation, has been
awarded the David Kammerer
Memorial Scholarship. He is a Midwest barefoot competitor and
served as the video manager for the Barefoot Regionals and chief
video manager for the Barefoot Nationals. Martin’s goal is to own
a computer animation production studio and produce feature-length
movies.
Elizabeth B. Flaherty (Black Creek, Wis.) is a two-time recipient
of the Tim Olson Memorial Scholarship. A senior
at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in human development
& family studies and psychology, her goal is pursue a career
as a school psychologist and eventually have a private practice.
Flaherty has served as an elected officer of the Chain Skimmers
Water Ski Team since 2000. She also is a member of the University
of Wisconsin water ski and wakeboard team.
The MasterCraft Scholarship is awarded to
Amanda Pavelski (Stevens Point, Wis.), a
junior attending the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She
is majoring in family & consumer sciences education with a minor
in nutrition. After graduation her goal is to teach cooking at a
junior high school or high school. Pavelski is a member of the Waupaca
Chain Skiers Water Ski Show Team, where she serves as show director.
She also has served as an instructor for Learn-to-Ski Days.
Jonathan Paulovich (Hewitt, N.J.),
a sophomore attending Clemson University with a major in industrial
engineering, received the Lex
Carroll Scholarship, established by Lex Carroll for an Eastern
Region water ski athlete. Paulovich's career objective is to work
in a management position, whether for a corporation or self-employment.
He is an assistant judge working toward regular. He serves as president
of the Clemson’s water ski team and enjoys instructing new team
members.
The Lex Carroll Scholarship is also being
given to Kevin Jack (Windham,
Maine), a junior majoring in elementary education at Florida
Southern College. His goal is to teach elementary school while attaining
his Masters and Ph.D., to pursue a career as a college professor
in the subject of elementary education. He is a regular judge and
assistant scorer and has officiated at the Eastern Regional and
Class C tournaments in New England. He is on the Athletes’ Advisory
Committee for the National Collegiate Water Ski Association.
The AWSEF scholarship programs are
supported by contributions from individuals, corporations and families
that have set up an endowment fund for a scholarship in memory of

The AWSEF, parent organization of
the Water Ski Hall of Fame and Museum, was founded in 1968 as a
non-profit foundation dedicated to the preservation of the traditions
of one of America's most popular family recreational activities
and to the encouragement of and education in the safe enjoyment
of water skiing.
Applicants must be a United States
citizen; incoming sophomore through senior level, full-time students
at a two- or four-year accredited college; and an active member
of USA Water Ski.
