Keeping Our Young Folks Safe – Priority #1 – SAFE SPORT TRAINING

Safety is always a priority at any AWSA event. I’m proud of the great care that our safety directors take in preparing a site and looking out for the safety of everyone. There is another important aspect to keeping our junior athletes safe. That is covered in the USA Water Ski and Wake Sports, Safe Sport Program. The program includes two parts, Safe Sport Training and a Background Check. I recommend that all water ski club members take the Safe Sport Training.  In addition, some AWSA positions REQUIRE that you take the Safe Sport Training and in some cases undergo a Criminal Background Screening.
The information in the training is relevant and can be completed in one evening or spread out over a couple of sittings. I knocked it out in a few hours over a cup of coffee.

The following link provides all of the details and directions for accessing the Safe Sport Training.      2018 ALL SD SAFE SPORT PROGRAM 2-13-2018

If you interact with Jr. athletes in Teams, as an Instructor or a leader in Junior Development, you are likely required to comply.  See the chart here.  Safe Sport Compliance Chart v8

Pre-Regionals Junior Development Update

We have a great evening of fun planned for our juniors on Thursday evening from 6pm – 8pm at The Castle Fun Center – take a look at the website at http://thecastlefuncenter.com/.

All juniors competing at Regionals and their siblings are invited for fun, activities, pizza and ice cream. Parents are welcome to join in for the pizza and ice cream. However, we need to get a head count ahead of time. Please RSVP for the party by July 23 by emailing to TG Powell.

Parents who want to purchase activity passes for themselves can do so for a discounted price of $17.99 as long as you reserve your spot by the July 23rd deadline (payment can be made onsite at Regionals at the Junior Development Tent).

Stop by the Junior Development Tent at Regionals on Wednesday afternoon during registration, and all day Thursday. The tent will be between the two lakes, and close to both start docks. Juniors can check in to pick up their t-shirt and get their picture taken for the guidebook. Special thanks go out to Kaleidoscope Imprints for providing the T shirts! Parents and others can check out the FUNdraising activities including a raffle, equipment exchange, and a selection of water ski and East is Beast themed merchandise – all to benefit Junior Development.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Do you have t-shirts left over from your tournaments or events? Donate them to the Junior Development t-shirt sale. Event t-shirts are always some of our most popular items.

Donate you old water ski gear to the Junior Development Equipment Exchange Bin. Here is how it works: Bring your old wetsuits, bindings, gloves, handles, skis … drop it off at the used equipment exchange bin – look for the big blue bucket … and let’s do an equipment sale! You donate the equipment, others snag the equipment and put $$ in the jar. – all proceeds go to Jr Dev!!!!

Any questions or to volunteer to help out, contact TG Powell by email or at 703 395 7499, or stop by the juniors tent at Regionals.

2016 EVP Baton Toss

Greetings!

I hope everyone that attended the 2016 Regional Championships at Lake Holly had a blast!  I know I did!

The  new fangled team event brought about some friendly ‘smack’ talk, great competition and brought in skiers that typically wouldn’t have skied in a particular event; or even come to regionals in the first place.  The team event was a success!!!

We had some changing of the guards, with Pat Bryne stepping back into the EVP spot for 2017 and Gary Noll taking Pat’s AWSA Director spot.  Bravo gentlemen.

Check out the following video address (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WblUI2janks) for some general highlights and our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/AWSA.East/) for pictures galore from the Regional Championships.

The video touches on:  EVP change, 2017 regionals, $$, other.

Even though I’ve stepped down as EVP, I will be helping with some of the coordination for the 2017 regionals until December 31st of this year; so if you are interested in helping out contact me so I can get you on the list.

Shout out to TG Powel for a great Jr Development event!  Netting just over $1000 in fundraising cash!!!  Rock on!!!

Also, I attempted to identify and chat with the skiers that had never come to regionals before!   Congrats!  And I hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Tally-Ho!  Tonya Maurer, former AWSA East Region EVP

How can you help?

You can volunteer to get wet in the dunk machine during the carnival themed juniors party on site at Lake Holly Friday night.  We need judges, officials and other water ski dignitaries to take a turn getting dunked to raise money for Junior Development.  The sign-up for dunkees will be at the Junior Development Tent.

We need a few more volunteers to help with the Juniors carnival party, especially if you have any skills like face painting or making balloon animals.

Do you have t shirts left over from your tournaments or events?  Donate them to the Junior Development t shirt sale.  Event t shirts were some of our most popular items last year.

Donate you old water ski gear to the  Junior Development Equipment Exchange Bin.  Here is how it works: Bring your old wetsuits, bindings, gloves, handles, skis …. drop it off at the used equipment exchange bin – look for the big blue bucket …. and let’s do an equipment sale! You donate the equipment, others snag the equipment and put $$ in the jar.  – all proceeds go to Jr Dev!!!!!

Any questions or to volunteer to help out, contact TG Powell at 703 395 7499 or TG.Powell@gmail.com or stop by the juniors tent at Regionals.
